On October 13, 2002 MPP organized a health and safety fair in Lindsay. The idea was developed when we realized the community was very concerned about their drinking water. The water is not safe; it could cause various health problems. We were also motivated by the fact that health insurance for labor immigrants is almost non-existent and there are limited locations that provide low-cost health care. All these issues made us realize that a health fair was needed. With the help of numerous organizations, it came true and was a huge success. We provided services to approximately 500 people. The attending community received tests for high blood pressure, sugar level in the blood, weight and height, as well as information about lead poisoning prevention, asthma, domestic violence, law issues, and immigration. Dental services and flu shots were also given. There was information about low-cost housing, special programs for the handicapped, how to properly use a child car seat, and how to apply for the Healthy Families insurance if they qualify. We also provided fun and happy moments for the entire family. There was music provided by a DJ, folkloric dancing, a clown, face painting, bounce houses for children. There was also free popcorn, fruit, water, balloons and a raffle to give away many prizes. This was a successful event; many people left with a good amount of information and free health services.
